Adrian was lucky enough to grow up with keen skiing parents who enjoyed the Whakapapa ski club scene. As a keen young skier he spent several seasons working at North American ski resorts.

Now his family enjoy the special on-mountain club community & comradarie. Adrian has held past Committee positions and was involved in the 2020/21 club re-clad project.

Treasurer

Jeremy King

I am a founding member of the club having joined whilst still at school and over the years have enjoyed many happy times at the club’s lodge on Whakapapa, house in Ohakune and National Park until its recent sale. I have made many good friends and have never left a time on the mountain unhappy, despite the vagaries of Ruapehu’s weather and in some years minimal snow. This includes not just skiing holidays but also work parties that I have attended.

In my working life I am a Chartered Accountant and in May of this year the Treasurer’s role became vacant so felt it was an opportunity to give back to the club utilising the skills I have, given how much I have enjoyed my involvement with the club over the years.

With two daughters who are both members and now students at university it has been great to see them enjoy club life back to when they were only a few years old.

Despite the challenges that the club and ski field operators have had with lack of snow, COVID and financial pressures I do think that there is still a future for skiing on Ruapehu which may look a little different in the future but will create more happy memories and highlight why it is important to encourage new and younger members to be involved.

Health & Safety

John Leybourn

John has been a member of IWIKAU for several years. Having spent a significant portion of my working life serving in the Royal New Zealand Navy, of which was aboard ships, I continue to do so, I find great solace in the mountains. They offer me a profound sense of freedom, allowing me to relax and enjoy the company of fellow club members. By the way, you can find me featured in the club's Fire Safety Video!
