I’d like to give you a brief account of our 42nd AGM for the Iwikau Ski Club, held on Wednesday 21 May 2025.
The 2024 winter was very disappointing for most, with historically low snow fall, low bed-nights, the club was left in a dismal financial position, our working capital, or cash to operate the club, was forecast to run out in late 2024. Our falling revenue had also been compounded by the shrinking membership base.
Fortunately, after selling the National Park lodge in March this year, the club is now in a very strong financial position, having cleared all its loans & holding cash reserves of $350k+.
The biggest challenge for the club at present, is to grow its membership base, which has fallen to 155 members. There were 78 non-financial members last year, so we are hoping that with Whakapapa Holdings & Pure Turoa breathing new life in to Mt Ruapehu, we will see a return of these members.
To entice new and old members alike, the AGM approved the following initiatives:
To allow members to make a confirmed, unaccompanied booking on behalf of guests.
To hold all membership fees & bed-night rates the same as last year.
To give all 2025 members (subs paid by 30 June 2025) two nights free, to be used during the 2025 winter season.
These are great incentives to renew your memberships and make the most of the lodges; even if it is for just one weekend! In proposing the last 2 initiatives the committee recognised that members have not received good value for their membership over the last 2 or 3 years.
Committee Update
Long standing committee members Sharon Willis (Treasurer) & Catherine Mason (Secretary) stood down at the AGM & they will be greatly missed. We are very fortunate to have founding member and accountant Jeremy King take up the Treasurer position .
Unfortunately the Secretary position remains empty, so I’d like to make a plea for anyone who might like to fill this position, to come forward.
We’d also like to find someone to fill the Club Captain position, to promote the club with a focus on building the membership base.
Club Constitution
In order to meet the requirements of the Incorporated Societies Act 2022, a number of minor changes to the constitution were made.
The quorum required for a General Meeting was also amended from 30 down to 20; given that we always struggle to get 30 members attending at the AGM.
Custodian
We pleased to confirm we are in discussions with our awesome custodian Linda Reed to return for the coming winter at the Whakapapa lodge.
Subs
2025 sub invoices will be released in due course, with the discounted early bird rate closing on 30 June. As a reminder an early bird adult sub will be $250 and include 2 nights accommodation at Whakapapa Lodge.
To close, I wish you all well and the best for the ski season. I particularly want to encourage you to make the most of the club with both your families, friends & associates....
Regards
Adrian Bosch
Club President
